Who We Are
The River Valley Chorus is the performing chorus of the Fredericton Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Our Chapter and Chorus are made up of men from all walks of life who have one thing in common. We like to sing. We sing a variety of songs in 4-part harmony.
Our chapter is a member of the Sunrise Division of the Northeastern District of the Barbershop Harmony Society
We sing music in the Barbershop Harmony style. While not everyone agrees exactly on a definition of this style, it is generally agreed that it consists of four part harmony, sung a cappella, that is sung without musical instrumental accompaniment. In our chorus, one group of men, sings each of the four parts: a melody part that sings the tune, and three other parts that sing harmony.
What? No ladies?
The barbershop style is "close" harmony. That is, all of the parts sing within the male singing range. So our chapter is composed entirely of male singers. There are parallel organizations for female barbershop harmony singers, with all four parts sung in the female range. Ladies, you may want to check out Fredericton's Elm City Echoes!
